What is box breathing?
Box breathing is a simple breathwork technique that comprises four equal steps; inhale, hold, exhale, hold. The name comes from the shape this creates: four equal sides, like a box.
The technique helps to regulate carbon dioxide levels in the blood, which has a calming effect on the body’s stress response.
The benefits people experience include reduced anxiety and stress, lowered heart rate and blood pressure, improved focus and mental clarity, and a faster recovery from moments of acute stress or panic. It’s been adopted by the US military as a tool for staying calm and sharp under extreme pressure, which gives you a sense of how robust the effect can be even in genuinely high-stakes situations.
It’s also useful as a meditation anchor for people who find pure mindfulness meditation difficult . The counting and the structured pattern give the mind something concrete to follow, making it easier to stay present rather than drift away from the moment.
The 4-second default is a good starting point. Moving to 5 or 6 seconds deepens the effect, since slower breathing further activates the vagus nerve and the parasympathetic response.
